Information Update - Nintendo 3DS & PSVita

1.- A whopping ten out of this years top twenty games in Europe were on Nintendo formats. Six consecutive games on a Nintendo platform were placed between number two and number seven.
More After the Break...

Wii Sports Resort, Pokémon Black and White, Wii Party, Wii Fit Plus, Mario Kart Wii, and New Super Mario Bros were all in the top ten best-selling games for the first nine months of 2011.

Mario Kart 7 will be available in Australia on December 3rd. This means it’s coming out right in the middle of it’s release in other regions. Usually we get left behind with this sort of stuff but, for this game at least, this is not the case, so hooray for that.

Kotaku has revealed that Resident Evil: Revelations will cost $50 when it arrives in early 2012. The reason for the higher price is that the game will be released on 4GB cartridge, which is twice the usual capacity. But the important question is, does this affect your interest in the game?

2.- Apple has had a bigger impact on video games than Nintendo, Sony and Microsoftaccording to 1000 people surveyed at the London Games Conference.

The top five people who have shaped video games are, Steve Jobs (26 per cent), Gabe Newell (16 per cent), Shigeru Miyamoto (seven per cent), Tim Berners-Lee (four per cent) and Mark Zuckerberg (three per cent).

It’s not just Nintendo announcing huge losses these days as Sony are reportedly expected to announce a loss of $1.2 billion. Sony originally projected a yearly loss of $769 million but has changed its forecast to a whopping 1.2 billion dollars.

“Management is feeling a serious sense of crisis about the seven years of losses,” continuing that he “promise[s] to lead the turnaround to get [Sony] out of the red.”

- Kaz Hirai, Executive Deputy President of Sony

3.- Nintendo has released another fantastic Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword trailer. The latest video gives an overview of the game and has roughly five minutes of Skyward Sword action.

As with most videos there’s plenty of spoilers contained within. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is released November 18th in Europe and November 20th in North America.
Have you ever wondered whether Link actually visits the toilet during his epic journeys? Well it turns out he does, as this new Skyward Sword video from IGN shows. I wonder how many other easter eggs will be littered throughout the game?

4.- Sony has issued a patent for a biometric PlayStation 3 controller and handheld, which if they saw the light of day, would function similarly to Nintendo’s delayed Vitality Sensor. The device will check things such as how moist your skin is, your heart rhythm, and muscle movements. Here’s a list of ideas regarding the device direct from Sony:

  • Weapons that change depending on how stressed you are. An increase in stress level could make a weapon more accurate or less steady, which will make it difficult to target an enemy. Sony specifically mentions a sniper situation where the weapon becomes more steady if you’re relaxed.
  • Tensing up your muscles to withstand an attack or charge up a shield.
  • A video game character whose facial expressions, movements, posture, and even voice changes depending on your biometric data. For example, this character will sweat when a player is nervous.
  • An adrenaline style boost which will let you run faster, jump higher, and punch harder when stressed.
  • A health bar that depletes more rapidly if you have a high stress level.
  • An attack button that changes a character’s move depending if the player is stressed or relaxed.
  • Background music and scenery that changes depending on your stress level. Matching music is one example, but Sony also proposes to change music to make a player more relaxed. Brightness of objects and the zoom level, representing a higher level of focus, are two ideas for scenery.
  • A game that adapts difficulty levels depending on a players stress level.
5.- We have a better glimpse at F1 2011 on the 3DS with a few screenshots and also a trailer:

Rockstar has finally given us the first official look at Grand Theft Auto V. The game is set in Los Angeles but Rockstar has yet to announce which formats the game will be available on, or when the game will make its début. Fingers firmly crossed for a Wii U version.

6.- Kotaku is reporting that Silicon Knights are hard at work creating one of its most requested titles for the next generation. Eternal Darkness is known to be the company’s most critically acclaimed title, so it would make sense for the company to focus their efforts on a sequel to the much-loved Gamecube title.

“The company is currently refocusing and returning to its roots, working on one of its most requested titles for the next generation.”
There is a new trailer for Beyond the Labyrinth that shows off various battles in the game.
