Information Update - Nintendo 3DS
1.- Activision has announced at Toy Fair that it’s preparing a sequel to the immensely popular Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure which is titled Skylanders Giants.
More After the Break...
The next chapter in the Skylanders franchise will introduce more than 20 New Figures Including Super-Sized Giants and Characters Featuring Light Technology. Every character from Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure is 100% compatible with Skylanders Giants and have leveled-up stats and customizations intact.
“The eShop, I feel, has really turned things around for Nintendo on the digital side because the storefront is heavily feature-driven. Any publisher can still produce whatever it wants, similar to iOS in both regards. However, given the feature-oriented nature, the eShop is quasi-curated without being some lame PR line like, ‘consciously developing a curated portfolio’ . That’s a steaming pile of PR right there, but that’s another story altogether.”
“If we look back at WiiWare, that system was broken because it was trying to be fair and feature nothing. WRONG. In the WiiWare system all games were created equal, but life’s not fair and all games are NOT made equal. Some suck hard, particularly on WiiWare. However, that doesn’t matter much in a system like the WiiWare shop because customers aren’t being directed anywhere. The top 20 is the easiest filter and being on the top 20 doesn’t mean a game is good/great, it just means they sell. Frogger, really?
I’m pretty certain that the number of total downloads (across all games etc) on most platforms typically hovers around the same rough figure. So, say you have 200 total customers to a given service per day, in the case of WiiWare, they’re getting lost in an ocean of blah. Other services, like eShop, have systems in place to control what people get to see and, to me, this is ideal.
Since the eShop is heavily feature-driven, this not only helps promote titles, it forces publishers and developers to make better games, hopefully. You want to get featured? You better have something good to show, curated or not. Will this change in the future? I have no idea as I’m not Mr.Iwata, but I do know that compared to how we did on WiiWare and DSiWare, eShop has a much better outlook. ”
2.- Hironobu Sakaguchi, the director behind The Last Story believes that video game developers are worrying too much about producing rich HD visuals, when they should in fact be worrying about the fundamentals in video game design.
“Now that high-quality graphics rule supreme, you can reproduce what you want to communicate visually, but at the same time, I don’t know how to put this, but there’s an element that’s slightly excessive about it all…You end up communicating too much to the player.”
“This is why I now feel that we’re at a turning point. With this title, I pressed reset and returned to the basics of what a game is. I started by spending a lot of time considering just what it means to tell a story in a game. But it went beyond simply considering the story side of things – I looked again at the fundamentals on the system side too.
“To be honest, I think that the HD images which have become mainstream in the TV industry are, for me personally, still rather over the top for the world of video games. There’s a tendency for developers to allow all their energy to be diverted into maintaining the high quality of the graphics.”
Nicalis has shared on Twitter that VVVVVV for the eShop has been rated in Europe. This suggests the game will probably soon launch in Europe. You can click here to find what we’ve written about the game in the past.
It has been revealed that Theatrhythm Final Fantasy features a place known as Chaos Temple that allows you to play the game with up to three friends. In the Chaos Temple you can earn experience, find rare items, and battle various Superbosses from the Final Fantasy series such as Omega, Shinryu, and Ultima Weapon.
