Information Update - Nintendo 3DS

1.- MCV, the publication that revealed that both Battlefield Evolved and Dark Knight Rises are possibly coming to retail this year, has discovered via a retail listing from a major UK High Street retailer that Grand Theft Auto V is coming out sometime during the Autumn. Rockstar has yet to announce whether we will be seeing the game on the Wii U, but it seems reasonably likely.

More After the Break...

EEDAR analyst Geoffrey Zatkin has shared some interesting facts and figures with Destructoid regarding Metacritic and video game sales. According to Zatkin average review score floats around the 68-71 out of 100 range, but the games rated in that range rarely sell more than 100,000 copies. Here’s a few more insights that you may find interesting:
  • Titles rated below 80 sell poorly
  • Average review score is around the 68-71 out of 100 range
  • These games rarely sell over 100,000 copies.
  • Using the 3-month average sales of titles in 2011, games in the 70-79 range sold only 62,000 units
  • 60-69 range sold roughly 57,000 units
  • 1,024 games were rated at 50 or below last year
  • These titles average 30,000 units in 3-month sales
  • 216 games rated at 90 or above in 2011
  • These titles saw average sales of 700,000 units
  • 80-89 rated games saw a 3-month average drops to 236,000 units
2.- Trade publication MCV has uncovered a listing for a new Battlefield title called Battlefield Evolved. EA already has Medal of Honor: Warfighter coming out this Fall, so it’s unlikely to be a brand new Battlefield game. Battlefield Evolved could well be a SKU that includes Battlefield 3 and all of its downloadable content. Hopefully there’s a chance it could appear on Wii U.

According to forum member over at DKVine EB Games are now accepting pre-orders for a Donkey Kong game for the Nintendo 3DS. Nintendo themselves haven’t mentioned such a game, but the image shows the pre-order box-art sitting on store shelves along with the forthcoming Kid Icarus: Uprising and Smash Bros 3DS. Perhaps we will hear something about the game at E3 in June, presuming it’s legitimate.

Rovio chief marketing officer Peter Vesterbacka has confirmed to Joystiq that the company wants Angry Birds Space on every platform available, including Nintendo 3DS. Gamers have been waiting for what seems like an eternity for the Angry Bird franchise to make its way to the Nintendo 3DS, but it seems as though the original Angry Birds, and the forthcoming Angry Birds Space, are finally coming.

“With all our games, we’re going for all the screens: Smartphones, tablets, TVs, the web, so we really want to bring Space to all the screens as well,”
“As always, we have limited resources, so we can only do iOS, Android, PC and Mac for the launch, but the other platforms will follow shortly after.”
“We’ll have our games on the 3DS pretty soon. The Vita we haven’t decided what to do about yet, but of course we want to be on all the screens, so let’s see how the Vita does in the market. And of course, always when working with these console guys it’s not that we can decide, it’s really if Sony wants to have Angry Birds on Vita. It’s more up to them than to us.”

3.- Nintendo has revealed via the Kid Icarus UK Twitter account that Kid Icarus: Uprising will feature rocket jumping in multiplayer mode. In case some of you are unfamiliar with this phenomenon, it involves firing a rocket at the ground while performing a jump. This move allows you to propel yourself high into the air, suffering minimal damage.
Gametrailers has managed to nab some footage of the forthcoming Mario Tennis Open for the Nintendo 3DS. The video footage shows how the game plays – utilising the touch-screen for various special moves, as well as the traditional face buttons. Mario Tennis Open is due for release May 20th in North America, and May 25th for Europe.

Nintendo, Game Freak and Creatures Inc have recently filed a trademark for a new Pokémon game called Pokémon Adventure Camp. There’s obviously no details on the game, or which platforms it could be appearing on, but I’d assume it’s a new Pokémon game for the Nintendo 3DS. What do you think Pokémon Adventure Camp will turn out to be?

Unreal Engine 4 is the next game development engine from Epic Games. According to Mark Rein, the CEO of the company that develops it (along with the previous incarnations which have been the back-end for hundreds of games), people will be “shocked” when they see it later this year. Only a few developers have seen it these past few days at GDC 2012. But we have some (potentially) good news:

It might be coming to Wii U.
The rumour begins on NeoGAF, where a user has stated that their friend has a source whose a developer within a company that does work “on pretty much every system”. And according to them, Epic has Unreal Engine 4 running on the hardware, with Nintendo specifically tweaking the hardware to make it happen.
The main thing that separates this from other rumours we’ve heard is that it makes sense. Nintendo doesn’t want a repeat of the Wii in regards to third party support. If they can support Unreal Engine 4, which will surely be one of the biggest engines for the next generation of gaming, then it will only serve them down the line as more developers are able to bring their games to the platform. But maybe that’s just me justifying the rumour because I want it to be true. We’ll have to wait and see.
You can check after the break to see the latest demo for Unreal Engine 3, codenamed “Samaritan”, that Mark Rein has implied will look like “crap” once Unreal Engine 4 is shown off. If you watch the video, you’ll see how exciting that is, and how brilliant it would be for the next engine to arrive on the Wii U.
