Information Update - Nintendo 3DS

1.- Yesterdays NPD sales figures for North America have shown that there’s at least eight Nintendo 3DS games in the top twenty-five software chart. The NPD group told Joystiq that “some examples” of the 3DS titles that made the list include Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure, Mario Kart 7, Super Mario 3D Land, FIFA Soccer, Lego Star Wars 3: The Clone Wars, Lego Pirates of the Caribbean, Resident Evil: Revelations, and Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

More After the Break...
Troubled UK retail firm GAME has told its senior staff to brace for the possibility of administration by CEO Ian Shepherd. GAME is currently running what is described as a Fire Sale to get rid of stock. Several people have reported that they’ve managed to get hold of some bargains, so it could be worth your while popping down to your local store to grab yourself something on the cheap.

Although it’s not strictly Nintendo related news, MCV is reporting that the next Xbox console won’t come equipped with a disc drive, and will launch sometime next year. If true then the next Xbox will be the worlds first console to forgo a disc drive in favour of downloadable games. I’m sure GameStop and GAME won’t be too pleased with this news.

The briefings have been issued under what MCV’s source describes as “the strictest NDA” they have ever encountered.
Although the console will not include a disc drive, it will offer compatibility with some sort of interchangeable solid-state card storage, although it is not known whether this will be proprietary or a more standard format such as SD.
Furthermore, a 2013 launch date for the hardware has been confirmed. What is less clear, however, is the intended timing of Microsoft’s announcement.

2.- Nintendo UK has uploaded the four-minute Kid Icarus: Uprising trailer that I featured yesterday on the site. The trailer shows off the fast and frantic action that players can expect when Kid Icarus: Uprising launches on March 23rd in Europe, and North America.
The 3D trailer for Kid Icarus: Uprising is now also available to watch on the Nintendo 3DS eShop.

Respected, but sometimes controversial, gaming publication Edge has awarded the forthcoming Kid Icarus: Uprising on Nintendo 3DS a solid 8/10. The magazine states that Kid Icarus: Uprising is a smart splicing of Star Fox and Zelda, which should please fans. Kid Icarus: Uprising is exclusive to the Nintendo 3DS and is due for release March 23rd.
Kid Icarus is back, then, and it turns out we did miss him. With Uprising, those internet petitioners finally have something they can be proud of. The control scheme initially seems lopsided, but works wonderfully for the flying sections, while any slight clumsiness on foot is countered by a responsive dodge. A worryingly compulsive weapon-fusing system thrown in, adding a chunk of the Pokemon gene to a game that already feels like a smart splicing of Star Fox and Zelda.
Ubisoft’s UK boss Rob Cooper has told MCV that Assassins Creed 3 will be the perfect time for newcomers to get on-board the well-received series. Although Assassins Creed 3 is technically the fifth edition in the series, Assassins Creed 3 brings with it a brand new location and main protagonist.

“This is a great time for gamers to join the adventure. There’s a huge will from Ubisoft to bring more gamers into this universe.

“Assassin’s Creed III is the biggest and most ambitious launch in Ubisoft’s history so we absolutely believe this game will continue to grow the franchise.”

3.- Nintendo has issued a press release which states that Super Mario Galaxy became the ninth Wii game to sell more than 5 million units in the United States, according to the NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States. The Wii system, which crossed 39 million units sold in February, now has nearly twice as many 5-million sellers as competing current-generation consoles combined.

“Wii continues its record-breaking run by surpassing 39 million units in its 64th month, a pace that is unmatched by any other system in U.S. history.Titles like Super Mario Galaxy help explain why Wii continues to resonate with consumers. The fact that one of the best-reviewed games of all time is available for a suggested retail price of $19.99 speaks to Nintendo’s combination of quality, family fun and value that is unmatched in our industry.”

- Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing.
Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 for Nintendo 3DS each sold more than 100,000 units, bringing the life-to-date totals to more than 1.85 million and 1.45 million respectively.
Pokémon Black Version and Pokémon White Version for Nintendo DS have now sold more than 4 million combined units in the United States.

Nintendo sold 625,000 total hardware units in February and saw double-digit growth across each of its product lines compared to January. This includes:
  • Nintendo 3DS: 262,000, a 53 percent increase
  • Wii: 228,000, a 50 percent increase
  • Nintendo DS: 135,000, a 76 percent increase
  • Total: 625,000, a 57 percent increase
Two Tribes has released a teaser trailer for Toki Tori 2, which they confirmed would be coming to the Wii U via the eShop.

Shifting World.

Nintendo has released the first commercial for Kid Icarus: Uprising that is set to air in North America and you can check it out after the break.

There are new screenshots and artwork from Guild 01 after the break. The game is a compilation that’s being worked on by a team of talented developers.

The first animated short for Kid Icarus: Uprising is now available via Nintendo Video in North America and Japan. This instalment is the beginning of a three-episode series that focuses on Pit fighting Thanatos, the god of death. There’s no word on whether the short has hit Australia and Europe, but we’ll be watching for when it does.

Keiji Inafune, the creator of Mega Man has confirmed that King of Pirates, which was announced for the 3DS last year will be released outside of Japan, saying:

For all my titles, I’m looking to do worldwide publishing. I can’t say who is publishing because it could be Marvelous directly or maybe they’re going to find another publisher in the US. But the plan is to do it worldwide.

And of course, that’s great to hear.

There are new, direct-feed screenshots from Kingdom Hearts 3D that show the Dive Mode, the Link Portal, and the Dream Eater Training Toys.

CRUSH3D was scheduled to launch on March 13th in North America, but SEGA has tweeted that the game will be launching tomorrow. The game will still retail for $20 as a Gamespot exclusive. You can click here to find it for yourself.
