Information Update - Nintendo 3DS

1.- Gareth Wilson, Design Director at Sumo Digital has told Eurogamer that the development team behind Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed created the game with future platforms in mind. Wilson couldn’t comment on the possibility of a Wii U version, but it seems incredibly likely given the game will be released later this year. The original Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing performed well at retail for Wii.

(created “with future platforms in mind,” says Wilson – but no, he can’t confirm or deny a Wii U release)
Sega has released the first footage of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. Sega announced the game earlier today for Nintendo 3DS, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. Sega announced a few of the characters that will be made available which include Dr. Eggman and AiAi from the Super Monkey Ball games, Gilius Thunderhead from Golden Axe and Vyse from Skies of Arcadia. It’s also rumoured that Vectorman and Ristar will make an appearance. Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is coming later this year.

Nintendo has reconfirmed that Paper Mario 3D, Animal Crossing: Jump Out and Luigi’s Mansion 2 for the Nintendo 3DS are still scheduled for a 2012 release in Japan. Both Animal Crossing: Jump Out and Paper Mario 3D are listed as ‘to be announced’ in North America, but Luigi’s Mansion is listed as being released this year.

Sega has officially announced Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed which will be coming to the Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. Some of the characters announced for the game include Dr. Eggman and AiAi from the Super Monkey Ball games, Gilius Thunderhead from Golden Axe and Vyse from Skies of Arcadia. The “transformed” part of the title refers to the fact that the characters Karts can change into cars, planes and boats depending on the racing surface. Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is coming sometime later in 2012.

2.- It looks as though the rumours were correct as Nintendo of America has just announced via a press release that the Midnight Purple Nintendo 3DS console will launch May 20th. The new colour will launch May 20th, the same day Mario Tennis Open becomes available. The Midnight Purple Nintendo 3DS is offered at a suggested retail price of $169.99 in the United States.

European video game content rating board PEGI has rated Rayman for the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console. Presumably it’s Rayman for the Game Boy Colour which Ubisoft released back in 2000. Rayman will be the second Ubisoft game for the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console as Prince of Persia for the Game Boy Colour was released back in January.

Retro gaming fans are in for a treat this Thursday when two classic 80’s games come to the Virtual Console.

The first retro offering is Game & Watch Gallery 2, the Game Boy Color classic, which features a collection of five vintage handheld games including Parachute, Helmet and the original Donkey Kong. Each game is playable in their original 80s version and also in a remastered version featuring enhanced graphics, sound and new gameplay, giving you two different gaming experiences.

Also on offer is one for cat lovers as Cat Frenzy makes its way onto Nintendo DSiWare. In order to save the kittens that are trapped in the well, you will have to Slide rows or columns of cute, cuddly cats to create chains to pull them out of the well. With over 100 levels across two game modes, there is plenty of feline fun to keep you engaged!

Coming to Virtual Console on Wii this week is Super Hang-On, the hit arcade racing sequel to the SEGA classic “Hang-On”. Originally appearing in European arcades in 1987, it will put your street bike skills well and truly to the test through 48 challenging tracks set across four continents. Super Hang-On is retro arcade racing at its very best.

Craig Harris, who was previously part of IGN’s Nintendo editorial team, now a Sega employee, has stated that Nintendo has to ”release hardware that’s of the expectations of the gamer today”. Harris believes that the company wouldn’t bring a game to Wii U if the hardware doesn’t match up to today’s platforms.

“I don’t think we would be bringing the game to a system that would be inferior to current systems.”
