Information Update - Nintendo 3DS

1.- Satoru Iwata has hinted to investors that Western third-party developers are back onboard with the Nintendo 3DS. Iwata admitted to investors that third-party developers were hesitant to develop for the Nintendo 3DS due to poor sales, but since the systems turnaround worldwide, they’re now back onboard. Iwata teased that we should see a “richer” software lineup for the Nintendo 3DS at E3, which takes place next month.
More After the Break...

“As for the Nintendo 3DS, there may appear to be fewer commitments from the U.S. and the European software publishers than those of their Japanese counterparts. This is due to the different timing (between Japan and overseas) when they noticed that the Nintendo 3DS would surely expand widely into their markets and, thus, the different timing when they started the actual development of the Nintendo 3DS software. You will also notice a change in this situation when a richer Nintendo 3DS software lineup in the overseas markets is announced around the time of the E3 show. In Japan, we have this solid feeling that the Japanese publishers will continuously support the Nintendo 3DS. Accordingly, I have no pessimistic view on the Nintendo 3DS software lineup.”

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has informed investors of the potential benefits and the downfalls of providing full retail games digitally on both Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. We found out earlier today that Nintendo is letting third-party developers put their retail titles up for download on both the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. Nintendo will begin doing this when it launches New Super Mario Bros 2 in August.

“First, about your comment that digital download sales of packaged Wii U software may not be so attractive to consumers because of the amount of download time, it is true that downloading software with 10 gigabytes of memory cannot be done in an instant today, even with broadband connections. So, compared with the situation of portable gaming devices, where comparatively compact-sized software can be downloaded, we have to ask our consumers to wait for a longer time before the download process is completed. However, consumers will be able to use the Wii U effectively by finding convenient times to download software such as when they are sleeping at night. Some consumers prefer to download digital software so that they can play with them on their system anytime without the need to exchange the games’ storage media. Some other consumers find it easier to purchase the medium at a retailer and play it as soon as they insert it into the game hardware. These consumers think it advantageous that they can exchange games with their friends. In order to offer consumers options to choose from, it is important for the company to first make the situation (where digital downloads of packaged software are offered to our consumers in addition to the existing packaged software sales) a reality, and we are ready to offer these options now.”

2.- Nintendo has confirmed that third-party retail titles will be available to download on both the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U at launch. Nintendo already confirmed at its investors meeting that first party titles starting with New Super Mario Bros 2 will be available at launch on the Nintendo 3DS eShop in August.

Disney’s Epic Mickey producer Warren Spector firmly believes that the original Epic Mickey game is the best looking title on Wii. Spector is also adamant that the game sounds better than any Wii game ever created. He did however promise that Epic Mickey: The Power of Two will be a natural improvement over the original, which received mixed reviews from numerous quarters.

”As obnoxious as it sounds, I still think the first Mickey game was the best looking Wii game ever that anyone’s ever made so sue me. I love the way the game looks. I’m not saying anyone else has to agree, it’s just my opinion.

“I also think it sounds better than any Wii game ever [laughing] but you can always do better. We’re going to. When people see the 2D levels, the 2D side-scrolling levels in the new game I think they’re going to see that the team has taken those to a whole new level.”

“We’ve already talked about camera and voice [in Epic Mickey: The Power of Two] – of course we’re going to do better this time around – we built a studio and team, a world, a code base, a game engine, we established our relationships with everyone at Nintendo and Disney with the first game.

“This time around we know what the world is, we know who the characters are, we know what the gameplay is. What are paint and thinner for? We didn’t even know that when we started the first game. So I would hope that everything will be better this time around.”

Following last month’s unveiling of the Special Games mode in Mario Tennis Open, Nintendo has revealed even more details about the upcoming game, which launches exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS on May 20th in North America and May 25th in Europe.

Newly revealed game elements include the following:
Online Play: Mario Tennis Open players can compete and cooperate in local wireless matches with other opponents and play exhilarating games. Players can also build up their Open Match standings, check the monthly leaderboard and win Victory Medals from every challenger they defeat.
Ink Showdown: In this fast-paced competition, Piranha Plants spit ink balls from the back edge of the court. Players must destroy the ink balls before they splatter, while hitting tennis balls away from an opponent.
StreetPass Features: Players can inspire friendly competition by using the Nintendo 3DS system’s StreetPass feature. They can engage in competitive StreetPass Matches or cooperative Ring Shot challenges with computer-controlled versions of people they encounter and share their StreetPass winning streak. StreetPass can also be used to show off players’ Mii characters, which can be customized with new outfits and accessories that can improve their on-court performance. As users play, new items for their Mii will be unlocked in the Item Shop.
Unlockable Characters: New and familiar Nintendo characters can be unlocked – some through game play, others via special QR Codes. Unlockable characters include Luma, Baby Mario and Dry Bowser.

3.- Publisher Activision and developer Treyarch have finally revealed Call of Duty: Black Ops 2which is due for release on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on the 13th November. Black Ops 2 is set in the near-future during a 21st century Cold War “where technology and weapons have converged to create a new generation of warfare”. The official trailer for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 should go live fairly soon
Kingdom Hearts producer Tetsuya Nomura has explained in the Kingdom Hearts 3D Ultimania guide-book that his team has already begun work on a new game in the series. Nomura believes that this team will be able to make an announcement quite soon.

Nicalis has announced via Twitter that it has decided to cancel publishing La-Mulana for WiiWare in both North America and Europe. The game was originally ported to WiiWare by Nicalis on June 21st in Japan.
