Information Update - Nintendo 3DS

1.- Although Wii U will be released this year, Nintendo did not reveal the price of their upcoming console. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata acknowledges that the initial price-point of Nintendo 3DS “was considered relatively high by consumers,” and assured that Nintendo “won’t make the same mistake” with Wii U. Iwata promises that Wii U will have a reasonable price. What would be a reasonable price for Wii U?

More After the Break...

Stephen Totilo of Kotaku says that a number of developer have told him that while the Wii U will easily be able to handle ports from Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, the console will encounter difficulty when major third-party companies start producing games for the next Xbox and PlayStation. Totilo’s sources have told him that the next generation consoles will be about 6-8 times more powerful than the current Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Disney has announced that their latest animated film Wreck-It Ralph will be coming exclusively to Nintendo platforms this year. The movie tie-in will be coming to Wii, Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS, and features a wealth of video gaming nostalgia.

Toki Tori 2 developer Two Tribes believes that Nintendo will launch Wii U this November. The development studio wouldn’t say whether this was an international date, or just North America. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has vaguely stated that the console will be out this holiday season.

Treyarch director of communications John Rafacz has told Video Gamer that a Wii U version of Call of Duty could really help advance the immensely popular series. Call of Duty Black Ops 2 is supposedly coming to Wii U, but neither publisher Activision, or developer Treyarch, have officially confirmed it.

EA has apparently canceled development of an unannounced next generation game on Wii U. The unspecified game is still being developed for the next Xbox and the PlayStation 4. The game, which uses the gorgeous Frostbite engine, was successfully ported over to Wii U, but was cancelled due to concerns over big-budget games and low stocks.

GameStop is currently offering the Nintendo 3DS XL for the cheapest price in the UK. The retail emporium is selling the recently announced console for £167.97. As I mentionedearlier last week, pre-orders for the console vary in pricing in the United Kingdom. Shopto is selling the console for £179.84, and Zavvi is offering it for £209.95. The Nintendo 3DS XL goes on sale on July 28th in the UK.

An industry source has told Kotaku that:

After the next generation of machines comes out, Wii U will be a performance orphan. It will be closer in performance to the next iPad than the next-gen machines.

That in itself doesn’t spell doom for Nintendo, of course, and it’s impossible know when these sources have any biases that might affect their judgement of what should be a purely fact-based argument. To dive deeper into a perspective on where the Wii U is heading, you might want to read the full report.

2.- Just in case it wasn’t super clear, Nintendo has confirmed that, in North America, they’re “including a 4 GB Memory Card and an AC adapter with each Nintendo 3DS XL”. The adapter was also confirmed to be included with the device in both Australia and New Zealand.
