Information Update - Nintendo 3DS

1.- The Nintendo 3DS has broken Enterbrain’s monthly sales record in December as the system sold an astonishing 1,492,931 units during the Christmas period.
More After the Break...

Sankei Newssays that this is the highest single month sales total since Enterbrain started tracking hardware sales back in 1997.

Respected UK games industry publication MCV is reporting that an extremely reliable source has told them that both Microsoft and Sony will be showing off their next generation consoles at this summers E3 event. It will mark the very first time in the show’s 17-year history that three fresh, rival console formats will be competing against each other.
“Obviously we can’t reveal our sources. But you have my personal word on this – the source is exemplary, 100 per cent concrete, ultra high level.”

Swiss retailer 1ADVD has revealed that Nintendo will be releasing The Last Story Special Edition in Europe. The special edition of the game will contain the following items when it presumably goes on sale along with the regular edition of The Last Story on February 24th.
  • A copy of the game
  • Premium steelbook (a metal case for the game and the bundle)
  • Mini art book
  • Soundtrack CD consisting of 7 tracks
2.- Melora from History of Hyrule is doing fans an exceptional service by publishing the complete translated Hyrule Historia online. Melora has apparently unglued the book from its binding and has started scanning every single page of the sought-after publication. As of the time of writing the site itself has gone down, but expect it to be back up later.

Shigeru Miyamoto has told Zoomin Games that despite working on Pikmin 3 and Luigi’s Mansion 2 he’s hard at work on his undisclosed original project. Miyamoto wouldn’t disclose what platform the new project is for, but we should hear more about it during E3 in June as Miyamoto previously stated he would reveal it this year.
Speaking about that mysterious new project, Miyamoto said “If you ask me, ‘Is it too much pressure to try to come out with something new?’ I have to say no, I’m enjoying myself.”
“Each creator has his or her own field for which he or she is particularly good at. I’m not saying that I am particularly bad at making the very photo-realistic video games. But when it comes to the realistic games, you have to create something familiar. I personally want to make something really different.”
London-based Icon Games has revealed that Nintendo has asked them to promptly remove WiiWare sales data that the developer posted on its own blog. Icon Games had listed the sales figures for all the formats it develops for but was told by Nintendo to remove digital Wii transactions.
“Yesterday Nintendo got in touch to ask us to remove the figures for the WiiWare titles from the blog. Apparently they don’t allow developers to publish the sales numbers of their self-published titles.”
“As to why, I can’t really be sure – are they scared to reveal how their online services perform or do they just dislike developers being able to run effective businesses? It is a tricky one – and incredibly unfair and damaging to indie developers publishing on Nintendo stores.

“I don’t believe Nintendo are necessary alone in this policy, but I believe they are by far the most draconian in enforcing it. I have seen many different reports from developers for games on XBLA, PSN, Steam and so on with details of sales figures, but never anything for a Nintendo store.”

3.- Industry Gamers has gathered a bunch of analysts and has asked them what Nintendo must resolve to do this year. Pachter says that firstly Nintendo need to “simply stop living in the past in 2012″ and secondly they need to get third-party software developers on-board with Wii U, something Pachter doesn’t think they are currently achieving. Here’s Pachters full rant for your reading pleasure:
Nintendo has to simply stop living in the past in 2012. They had a great deal of success since 1985 by making proprietary hardware and supporting it with proprietary software. They attracted third party support based upon the large installed base they generated for their hardware. They appear to me to be confident that “if they build it, third parties will support it”, but I don’t think that is the case for Wii U. By trying to be “different” with the tablet controller, they have complicated game design for developers, who can’t figure out if the Wii U will ultimately support only one or multiple controllers. Nintendo made the device sufficiently different that they are all but assured of limited third party launch support, which ultimately will lead to modest hardware sales.
They should stop relying upon the strategy that got them here, as it appears to no longer be working. I think their resolution should be to look outside of Nintendo for leadership in the areas of digital downloads, a user-friendly online interface and multiplayer gaming.

US retail chain Toys ‘R Us is selling Ubisoft’s fantastic 2D platformer for a mere $19.99. The pricing includes the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions as well as Wii. Rayman Origins is one of the best platform games I’ve played since Donkey Kong Country Returnsand I would say that it proudly sits alongside Super Mario 3D Land as the best platformer of 2011.

4.- Edmund McMillen of Team Meat has revealed that it is very possible that The Binding of Isaac may come to the 3DS, but “it’s still going through the higher ups to make sure there won’t be an issue with the ‘religious’ aspect.” He also stated that if the game were to make it to the 3DS, it would have ‘The Wrath of the Lamb’ expansion which adds about 50% more content to the game.

Resident Evil: Revelations is only a few weeks away from launching, but in the meantime you can check after the break for new screenshots from the game.
There is a large amount of screenshots and artwork from Tekken Prime 3D Edition that you can check out after the break.

Capcom is going to release the original soundtrack of Resident Evil: Revelations next month in Japan. The album will come with two discs, the first disc will have 66 tracks from Resident Evil: Revelations and 31 tracks from Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D on the second disc. The price for the album is 3990 yen ($52 US Dollars).

5.- It seems as though the PlayStation Vita can’t catch a break in Japan at the moment as the console was beaten by the PlayStation Portable for the second week running. The PlayStation Vita managed to sell 42,648 units in its third week on sale according to Japanese chart company Media Create whilst the Nintendo 3DS sold 197,952 – beating the PlayStation Vita by a ratio of five to one.

Tecmo Koei announces that Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus will release across North America and Europe on February 22, 2012, launch day for the PlayStation Vita in the Western Hemisphere.
Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus is a port of the PlayStation 3 game with enhanced PlayStation Vita features, including using the rear track pad to launch new attacks, using the gyro sensor to target enemies and enabling the player to switch between first and third person views. Yosuke Hayashi is very confident with the port of Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus.
“We’re confident that gamers, both our fans and those new to the series, will find Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus to be a thrilling and challenging experience that lives up to the spirit of what the series is best known for while offering a host of new and portable gameplay mechanics.”

Japanese publication The Nikkei is reporting that Kaz Hirai will be promoted and will take over the role as president of Sony, while Howard Stringer is expected to remain chairman and CEO of the company. Hirai could become Sony president as soon as April.
