Information Update - Nintendo 3DS

1.- Nintendo France has announced that the Nintendo 3DS was the best-selling console of 2011 selling an impressive 761,000 units.

The Wii and the Nintendo DS also performed well in France although Nintendo would only give a combined figure for both platforms.

SCEE president and CEO Jim Ryan has told MCV that the company has been watching Nintendo 3DS sales closely and are encouraged by the systems performance in recent times, though he refuses to acknowledge that the 3DS poses a danger to Vita. Sony’s PlayStation Vita is currently struggling to win over Japanese consumers.

“One of the encouraging things about 3DS’ sales performance at Christmas is that it is confounding the naysayers who say that there is no room in the market for a dedicated handheld gaming device,” he told MCV in an exclusive interview.
“And to that extent we were encouraged by how 3DS did over the last month.
But doesn’t the appetite for 3DS pose a danger to Vita? Apparently not.
“There are two distinct markets,” Ryan added.
“The quality, the immersiveness, the richness of the experience that we believe we are going to offer on Vita, way exceeds anything that we believe to be available on any smartphone.”

2.- Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter is firmly under the impression that Wii U isn’t a next generation console which leads him to boldly claim that Microsoft and Sony shouldn’t be worried about the console. Pachter describes the Wii U as an Xbox 360 with a tablet controller that “is likely going to come out at a higher price point than the 360 at the time.”

“…And again, I take a lot of shit for this: their next gen system is a current gen system… But people who go, ‘well what are Microsoft and Sony going to do to catch up with Nintendo?’, they don’t care. Microsoft especially is not afraid of the Wii U. They look at the Wii U as an Xbox 360 with a tablet controller and is gonna likely come out at a higher price point than the 360 at the time.”
“[Wii U has] complicated game design for developers, who can’t figure out if the Wii U will ultimately support only one or multiple controllers.”

“Nintendo is all but assured of limited third party launch support”.


Ben Kuchera from Wired spoke to a Nintendo representative at this years CES event in Las Vegas who reconfirmed that Wii games played on Wii U won’t be displayed at a higher resolution. Disappointing news for those that wanted to play The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword in 720p on their Wii U console. Still, the console is fully backwards compatible with all Wii games and peripherals.

Popular online store Amazon has revealed the official box-art for the long-awaited Mario Party 9 for Wii. Nintendo has already announced that Mario Party 9 is due to be released March 11th in North America and scheduled to be released sometime in March in Europe.

An attendee from the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas has managed to capture some video footage of the fabled ’Tokyo Street Demo’ for Wii U. The demo was originally shown off to attendees at E3 but unfortunately no media footage surfaced online for the panoramic demo. Could it be pre-rendered footage?


3.- Nintendo has announced via CoroCoro magazine that Pokemon + Nobunaga’s Ambitionfor the Nintendo DS will be released on March 17th in Japan. Sadly Nintendo has yet to announce whether or not the game will make it to the West, but given how popular the Pokemon franchise is over here and the lack of original DS games in development, I’d say we have a chance.

Project Sora head Masahiro Sakurai has revealed that Kid Icarus: Uprising for the Nintendo 3DS will come bundled with a stand to keep your Nintendo 3DS nice and steady. The stand can be used with all Nintendo 3DS games. Will you be using it?

The latest issue of Jump magazine has revealed a world based on the 1940 animated movie Fantasia inKingdom Hearts 3D. The new world is called Symphony of Sorcery and will feature Mickey in his sorcerer’s hat and robe. You can check after the break for a look at the new world and the Tron Legacy world.
