Information Update - Nintendo 3DS

1.- The official site for Mario Kart 7 has been updated with footage of the Shell, Banana and Leaf Cup courses as well as footage of the battle courses.
More After the Break...

Retro Studios was involved with the development of Mario Kart 7. Just in case you were curious what their exact role was, Hideki Konno revealed that he “asked them to collaborate with us on aspects like course and character design. The course designers and artists at both EAD and Retro Studios worked closely together to create what I consider to be very prolific and high-quality work.”

According to the the NPD Group the Nintendo 3DS is about to surpass the first year sales of the immensely popular Nintendo DS. After eight months on the market the Nintendo 3DS has sold over 1.65 million units in the United States. Heres some other impressive figures to get your head round:
  • Nintendo sold more than 675,000 combined hardware units in October. This includes more than 250,000 units of Nintendo 3DS, nearly 250,000 Wii systems and nearly 180,000 units of the Nintendo DS family of systems.
  • For the year, Nintendo has sold a combined 7 million hardware units and more than 55 million units of software have been sold for Nintendo platforms. Both of these numbers should increase with the Nov. 20 launch of The Legend of Zelda™: Skyward Sword for Wii.
  • Both Wii, up 8 percent year over year, and Nintendo DS, up 23 percent over the previous month, demonstrated strong momentum heading into their respective sixth and eighth holiday seasons. In total, the two platforms have sold more than 87 million combined hardware units and more than 540 million combined units of software in the United States.
2.- We’re hearing that the 3DS may receive a 25% power boost through Nintendo providing the ability for developers to make use of the core of the CPU dedicated to the wireless options.

This would result in those wireless options being impacted though, possibly to the point that you would not be able to have your system connected to the internet while playing a game that takes advantage of this option. Remember, this is only a rumor, but either way, do you think that would be a fair trade off? Would you prefer a game to have access to 25% more power rather than any wireless functionality?

We heard that Nintendo will be at the LA Auto Show, but we’re not sure why. The reason is still a mystery, but it has been confirmed that Reggie Fils-Aime will hosting the planned presentation there, and that Nintendo will be collaborating on something with West Coast Customs (the stars of Pimp My Ride). It’d be odd if this wasn’t related to Mario Kart 7, but what exactly do you reckon it could be?

3.- EB Games has announced that the limited edition 3DS made for the 25th anniversary of The Legend of Zeldawill be coming to Australia on the 1st of December.

The bundle will retail for $249 but will not include a copy ofThe Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. It will also be only available through EB Games. There’s no word on a release in other regions.

Popular online gaming publication IGN has awarded The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sworda perfect ten out of ten. The review states that the game is ‘the greatest Zelda game ever created and one of the finest video game accomplishments of the past 10 years.’ Don’t forget to check Metacritic as the reviews start to roll in.

Eiji Aonuma, the producer behind The Legend of Zelda has spectacularly revealed that The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword wasn’t any good at the start of the development process, and it wasn’t until he finally stepped in and decided to take charge of the critically acclaimed game that Skyward Sword finally took shape.
“Well, thanks to the hard work of the designers, the island in the sky, named Skyloft, gradually came together,” said Aonuma during the latest Iwata Asks discussion. “This time, Link is going to the Knight Academy and is living in the dormitory. It’s a somewhat elaborate setting, so I wasn’t sure it would be all right, but when it had come together somewhat, I had Iwamoto-san show me the game from the beginning. And to be honest, it was no good at all!
“I could see that if it hadn’t come together to a certain extent by that point, when Miyamoto-san came in, he would be like, “What have you been doing all this time?!” I was worried.
“So the situation was coming to a boil. But even when I said, “Get on top of that!” there wasn’t anyone to do so, so I was like, “Then I’ll do it myself!”

The above scan from a catalogue has confirmed that Best Buy will be selling two bundles for the 3DS for $179.99 each.
