Information Update - Nintendo 3DS

1.- There’s a rumor that a redesign for the 3DS is coming in 2012. In their usual fashion, Nintendo has referred to the reports “rumors and speculation.”
More After the Break...

Then again, that doesn’t necessarily mean much. But the reports of a redesign are a bit odd.

The Nintendo 3DS has outsold all the other gaming systems combined in Japan this week. The system sold over 105,639 units in Japan between August 15th through to August 21st.
Clearly great news for Nintendo and great news for us as undoubtedly these strong sales will encourage more third-party studios to develop for the system.

  • 1. 3DS: 105,639 (196,077)
  • 2. PSP: 40,888 (40,389)
  • 3. PS3: 29,666 (20,239)
  • 4. Wii: 18,256 (19,607)
  • 5. DSi LL: 4,329 (4,213)
  • 6. DSi: 3,585 (3,531)
  • 7. PS2: 1,789 (1,513)
  • 8. X360: 1,427 (1,576)
  • 9. DS Lite: 117 (90)
  • 10. PSP go: 13 (20)

2.- Nintendo has revealed their PAX 2011 game line-up. Some of the highlights include:

  • Super Mario 3D Land
  • Mario Kart 7
  • Kid Icarus Uprising
  • Star Fox 64 3D
  • Shinobi
  • Sonic Generations

Nintendo will be hosting a Star Fox 64 3D tournament and also giving away AR markers for Pokedex 3D.

3.- Famitsu in Japan has revealed that SEGA is working on Rhythm Phantom Thief R: Inheritance of the Emperor Napoleon for the 3DS. It’s a rhythm adventure game where you take the role of Phantom Thief R who travels through Paris stealing rare and valuable treasures.

The rhythm portions of the game come into play as you attempt to break in and escape from buildings. The game is about 50% complete, uses the gyro sensor in some way and there are more details are coming soon.

Rumours relating to the Tokyo Game Show. They didn’t appear likely, but one of them said that “Sega has a Layton-like game but with rhythm action instead of puzzles,” which has become true.

As such, the rest of the rumours have resurfaced. The most exciting one is that Monster Hunter Tri G is coming to the 3DS. There’s been a few rumours for Monster Hunter coming to the 3DS, so maybe this’ll finally be when it happens.

Famitsu in Japan has just revealed that Beyond the Labyrinth will be making its playable debut at the Tokyo Game Show. They also reveal that Konami is preparing a minute-long trailer for the show. Hopefully this means more information about the game will also be revealed soon.

4.- Sony are remaining confident about the forthcoming PlayStation Vita despite analysts recommending they lower the console’s price to compete against the Nintendo 3DS. Head of Sony worldwide studios Shuhei Yoshida told Eurogamer that the company is extremely happy with the price point they’re offering.

“We are totally happy with the price we put.”

“Personally, I was expecting Nintendo might move their price, but I wasn’t expecting them to move at this time. We didn’t price Vita relative to 3DS or those other devices. We plan the value we want to put in to the Vita and the price people would perceive the value would be. Nothing changed since the announcement. We are totally happy.”

Sony senior group studio director Mick Hocking has told GameSpot that he doesn’t think 3D works well enough on a 3D handheld. The reason Sony left out 3D on the PlayStation Vita was due to the fact that you have to keep your head very still to get the optimum effect. Cryptically Hocking stated that they may include 3D in the next iteration of Vita.

5.- The makers of 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors are working on a new visual adventure game for the 3DS and Vita. The game (the title of which roughly translates to Extreme Escape Adventure: Good People Die) is being handled by the script writer and character designer from 999 and will feature full voiceover work.

The game stars the dashing hero Sigma who wakes up in a warehouse after being kidnapped. Sigma, the character with the blue jumpsuit, must then play aseries of games with 8 other people in order to escape alive. Extreme Escape Adventure is described by Chunsoft as a game of betrayal. The game is currently 50% complete.

6.- Nintendo has announced that it plans to release special Zelda themed Nintendo Point cards in Japan to help promote The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D.

Bizarrely Atari digital publishing SVP Owais Farooqui is under the impression that the failed hardware manufacturer has the edge over Nintendo. Farooqui claims that Atari has two major advantaged over Nintendo, firstly it doesn’t have any investment in hardware and secondly they are focusing a lot of time in the mobile space.

7.- Square Enix has revealed new details about Coral Tombs, a previously unseen area in Heroes of Ruin. This area is an ancient graveyard that has been taken over by the sea. The area will feature sea-based creatures such as fish beast, shark men and giant crabs.

More about this area will be revealed at PAX 2011, but for now you can check after the break for a screenshot of the entrance to Coral Tombs and many other new places.
Nicalis has confirmed that they’re bringing NightSky to the 3DS.
Marvelous Entertainment is working on a followup to Wii's Little King Story, and it's for PlayStation Vita. This week's Famitsu has first details on the game, whose Japanese name translates to "The King, The Demon King and the Seven Princesses: New King Story."
