Information Update - Nintendo 3DS


1.- Kenta Motokura, the art director behind Super Mario 3D Land has explained in the latest Iwata Ask segment that Luigi will be playable in Super Mario 3D Land.

You’ll be able to use Luigi during special stages that can be found after beating world 8-4.

Nintendo has released a new video showcasing the many levels found throughout Super Mario 3D Land for the Nintendo 3DS. Clearly a lot of the footage shown within the video could be considered spoilers. Super Mario 3D Land is out on November 18th in Europe and November 13th in North America.

“From the length of the stages to the placement of enemies and tricks to the difficulty, everything seems just right here,” says the writers for Famitsu magazine in their review of Super Mario 3D Land, “making for a really comfortable play experience.” Their positive thoughts are reflected in the score of 38/40, which is pretty darn impressive. And this is how they concluded their review:

The bits of the game that take advantage of 3D depth are a lot of fun, inspiring you to hunt around for all of the hidden stuff. There’s a wealth of helper functionality for beginners, and there’s also a lot of cute little touches to the game that will bring up twinges of nostalgia. The 3D space of this game is really well thought-out, allowing you to enjoy the 3D-based tricks while still feeling like a 2D Mario. It may just be Mario, but then, nothing is like Mario. The mix of discovery and surprise here is what you come to expect from the series.

Sega has issued a press release detailing a whole host of release dates for the Nintendo Wii and the Nintendo 3DS. Some of these dates were previously confirmed and others such as Crush 3D have changed. Now’s the perfect time to place down some pre-orders!

Shinobi – November 15th (U.S.), November 11th (EU)

Sonic Generations – November 22nd (U.S.), November 25th (EU)

Crush 3D – January 10th (U.S.), January 13th (EU)

Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympics – February 14th (U.S.), February 10th (EU)

2.- Nintendo has recorded a loss of 70.29 billion yen from the first half of the fiscal year ending September 30, 2011. Although it’s not as bad as the 100 billion yen that was previously predicted, it has left many doubting Nintendo’s current strategy going forward.

3.- EB Games in Australia has revealed the pre-order goodies gamers can pick up for purchasing either Mario Kart 7 or Super Mario 3D Land.

If you pre-order Mario Kart 7 you’re entitled to a plush Mario hat and if you purchase Super Mario 3D Land you can grab a cute Tanooki plush hat.


4.- Despite earlier reports that the Tales of the Abyss 3D had been delayed in Europe Namco Bandai has confirmed that the game is still on scheduled to launch November 25th. Sadly Tales of the Abyss 3D won’t be launching in North America until February 14th.

Yep, even the box art for Beyond the Labyrinth is gorgeous. There’s also a few small screenshots and the confirmation that it will be arriving in Japan on the 19th of January.

5.- Nintendo in the UK and Red Bull Media House are partnering to bring new videos to the Nintendo Video application. 

These videos will include clips from mountain bike championships, extreme dirt bike riding, downhill skiing, surfing, and other extreme sport events are by Red Bull Media House. All of this will be viewable in 3D, and is coming to the 3DS over the next few months.

6.- I’m not sure if this was ever announced, but Nicalis has shown off lenticular box art for Cave Story 3D. This means the box art will have a 3D-ish look. 

I’m assuming it’ll be a limited time thing, probably only for the initial production of the games, but it’s still neat. There’s a bigger image after the break, but the 3D-ish effect has to be seen in person like the 3DS.

7.- Capcom has said in their latest financial report that Resident Evil: The Mecenaries 3D “performed solidly” in regards to sales, which makes me wonder, why isn’t Capcom throwing more support behind the system? But I think it is one of those questions we’ll never know the answer too. 

Since they didn’t quantify the success of the game though, perhaps it didn’t do that well, only better than their projections.
