Information Update - Nintendo 3DS

1.- XSEED has confirmed that it’s looking to release a limited edition version of The Last Storywhen the game makes its debut in North America in July. Presumably the limited edition version of The Last Story will be similar to the version that was released in Europe back in February. The limited edition version of The Last Story contains a copy of the game, a steel book-case, a soundtrack, and an art book.
More After the Break...

Microsoft is preparing to reveal a peripheral not unlike the Wii Vitality Sensor for Xbox 360. The device will be used to accompany the currently announced Kinect Play Fit service and is codenamed Joule. The Joule heart-rate monitor will let Kinect owners track their heart rate wirelessly. Microsoft is gearing up to show off the device during its E3 press conference on Monday June 4th.

Kingdom Hearts series creator Tetsuya Nomura has explained that he’s now ready to return the Kingdom Hearts franchise to its console roots. Whether this has something to do with the below expected sales of Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance on the Nintendo 3DS remains to be seen. Nomura also stated that he still has an interest in HD versions of the previous Kingdom Hearts games and he is “currently researching them”.

“We have been invited to make games on different new platforms, and every time we have created titles making sure that they are highly compatible with the platform.”

“The PS Vita is definitely a powerful device that is very interesting, but because of it’s high power, there isn’t much of a difference with a console.”

“So even if we were to make a game, we would have to be very careful about how to create it for that device. I also feel that it’s about time that Kingdom Hearts should go back to being on a console.”

“If it is possible, I would like to do something about the series being spread over so many different consoles, too. I am thinking a lot about the future.”

Tim Sweeney, founder and CEO of the Gears of War and Unreal Engine 3 developer, hasexplained to Gamsutra that the intended platforms the next-gen Unreal Engine 4 is aimed at haven’t even been announced. This has prompted speculation that the Wii U may notreceive games running on Unreal Engine 4, and that those games are reserved specifically for the next Xbox and the PlayStation 4. We should find out for certain at E3 next month.

Gamasutra: I know it’s under wraps, but you guys are probably feeling pretty okay about Unreal Engine 4.

Tim Sweeney: Yeah, we’re starting a behind-closed-doors showing of the engine to developers; this is part of our very early ramp-up cycle. We went through this cycle with Unreal Engine 3 starting in 2003 and 2004. At some point we’ll make public announcements and ramp up to the point where developers are shipping games, but it’s very early right now. We’re aiming very high, and the intended platforms this is aimed at haven’t even been announced.

EA has announced that it plans to spend an incredible $80 million in development of games for “Gen4 console systems” during fiscal 2013. This is further proof that both Microsoft and Sony plan to release their next generation systems in late 2013. EA also revealed that the company is in profit for the year ending March 31st.

2.- EA has revealed that it’s busy developing a brand new Need for Speed game which is due to be released later this year. The company also announced that its working on the next instalment in the critically acclaimed Dead Space series. Platforms weren’t mentioned for either titles, but I’m certain we will hear more at next months E3 event.

Get ready to defy gravity once more as Captain Viridian, when the cult game VVVVVV arrives in Europe on Nintendo 3DS. Help the Captain navigate his crew’s way back to safety after their spaceship is unexpectedly under threat from dimensional interference. All-new Player Levels offer hours of additional gameplay, and include bonus stages created by professional game developers, such as Notch (Minecraft). Inspired by 8-bit classics from days gone by, and now in experience-heightening 3D, VVVVVV will challenge even the most battle-hardened old-school gamer!

Once again it’s up to you to help Sonic the Hedgehog in the age-old battle of good versus evil in Sonic Labyrinth, available via the NintendoeShop. In this classic Sonic action-puzzler, Dr Robotnik has sneakily replaced Sonic’s shoes with a pair of magical trainers that thwart his famous super-sonic speeds. It’s up to you to track down the hallowed Chaos Emeralds which are the only items that will bring it back!

For the first time ever outside of Japan, you now have the chance to protect the kingdom from evil in Monster World IV, on Virtual Console for Wii. Take on the role of the young adventurer Asha and set out on a fascinating journey to save the Elemental Spirits, accompanied all along the way by your beloved pet Pepe and magical Genie. Making its way onto the Wii Shop Channel this week is a second retro classic, Wonder Boy in Monster Land, where you must fight the fire-breathing dragon and his evil henchmen to prevent them from creating their own Monster Land.

A user on NeoGAF has shared that developers have started to receive the V5 dev kits for the Wii U. These are said to be the mass-produced dev kits, meaning they’re probably be the final ones. The arrival of the kits mean the developers have a month to get their content ready for E3 and supposedly the kits provide “a slight increase in their performances”. Supposedly, “there is at least one additional good news that come with them”, but as to what that good news entails, we’re not sure. E3 should reveal all though, and we’re closing in on it.

I’m not sure why you would care about the patent designs for the stylus and power brick for the Wii U, but for the sake of reporting on everything related to the system, you can find images of those things after the break. But be aware, there’s no surprises. They’re just a stylus and a power brick, after all.

A user from 3DSPlaza.com has begun work on Project Triniate, a browser-based MMORPG for the 3DS. The lack of Java or Flash on the 3DS does make this a considerable technical challenge, but there is a video of it working after the break, and you can click here to check out the thread dedicated to the project. The developer makes it clear that “it might not even be released to the public at all”, but it’s still an interesting concept.
