Information Update - Nintendo Wii U

1.-The International Data Corporation has composed a report that suggests that Wii U will be a key turning point in the games industry’s future.
More After the Break...

IDC expects the console market to bounce back in 2012 mainly due to the emergence of Wii U.

“I expect that the launch of the Wii U, a revamped interactive entertainment console from Microsoft in the 2014 timeframe, and the arrival of Sony’s ‘PS4′ circa 2015 – along with more than a few exclusive, innovative games – will help drive a new wave of console-centric spending in the next several years”

“Total console hardware and disc-based software revenues are on track to slide a few percent in 2011 compared to 2010. But prognostications that consoles have peaked as a product category are premature.”

2.- French site 01Net which was the site that provided leaked PlayStation Vita and Wii U information is claiming that they have brand new information regarding the Wii U. The most interesting piece of information is that Nintendo is currently aiming for a June release for the console.

“Ten months before the tentative release date – developers are still expecting a June 2012 release – the fact that Nintendo engineers are still struggling to make this supposedly final architecture function properly is worrisome at best. Could Nintendo have to make radical last-minute changes, and if so, what would be the cost? This unexpected development runs contrary to Nintendo’s reputation for carefully weighing all tech options long before any announcement. Inside the company, there have been talks of a delayed release, with September as a new tentative date. Being three months off-schedule doesn’t seem such a big issue, when compared to a home console’s life cycle. But this is not 2006 anymore.

The industry is undergoing a radical mutation, and there is a growing amount of rumors positioning Microsoft’s next system to be unveiled during the 2012 E3 conference, and a relase in short order. If that was to happen, the Wii U would only enjoy a few months of ‘optimal run’ alongside the Xbox 360, which would essentially moot the much-touted ease with which developers can port 360 code for the Wii U. To succeed in its incredibly audacious endeavour, Nintendo will have to walk a very tight rope.”

3.- John Carmack, the founder of id Software has referred to the Wii as “out of sync” with the other technologies like the Xbox 360 and PS3, explaining that “you couldn’t have the same content base also targeting the Wii.”

But he admits, in reference to the Wii U, that “It would probably be straightforward to target our stuff over there. It would depend on what the business case is for any of that.”

And that sounds somewhat hopeful. But it also feels like a little like the 3DS.

4.- Asura’s Wrath is a game designed by the development team behind the fantastic Solatorobo: Red The Hunter on Nintendo DS. Basically Capcom believe that it would be a great idea to bring the game to Wii U, but they really want to know gamers thoughts on the matter.

They say that if they hear enough from fans via their forums and the game’s Facebook page a Wii U version could happen.

5.- Nicalis, the people bringing Cave Story to the 3DS (along with other Nintendo platforms) have become an officially licensed Wii U developer. This doesn’t necessarily mean they’re working on anything, but I don’t think it’d be too surprising to see something from them within the first year after the Wii U is released.

6.- Danny Bilson of THQ has said that, in reference to the Wii U, they are:

…committed to that platform, so long as our developers find really interesting ways to use the controller so that it’s a unique experience and much more than a port.

He specifically mentions Darksiders 2, which is expected to be a launch title, saying that the game “has a very deep loot and inventory system, and having that live and not having to click out of your screen is really a bonus in a game like that.” He’s clear that this is “just one really simple example” though.

7.- There is a very loose rumour floating around that development of Battlefield 3 for the Wii U will not begin until 2012, implying that the game won’t be released until 2013.

Electronic Arts will either:

  • Release Battlefield 3 within the launch window of the Wii U.
  • Never release Battlefield 3 for the Wii U.

If the game doesn’t come out until 2013, it’s pretty much lost all of its relevance.
